GRE Score Calculator: Estimate Your Verbal, Quant & AW Score

The GRE was overhauled on September 22, 2023: ETS reduced the exam to 1 hour 58 minutes and 54 scored questions, but the 130–170 scale and section-level adaptive format remain the same.

Use this calculator to estimate your Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing scores, check your percentile ranks, and see how your results compare with 300+ top graduate programs

How GRE Scoring Works

Understanding exactly how your answers become a 130–170 score. The GRE uses a three-stage pipeline: raw score → section-level adaptation → equating.

Step 1: Raw Score

Your raw score equals your total correct answers. Each question counts equally. No penalty for wrong answers — blank answers count the same as wrong answers.

Always answer every question. Since there is zero penalty for wrong answers, leaving a question blank is strictly worse than guessing randomly. Even a random guess on a 5-choice question gives you a 20% chance of a free point.

Step 2: Section-Level Adaptive Testing

Your performance on Section 1 (12 questions, medium difficulty) determines the difficulty of Section 2 (15 questions). This is the most important mechanic in GRE scoring.

Step 3: Equating

ETS converts your raw score to a scaled score (130–170) using a proprietary equating process that accounts for the difficulty tier of your Section 2 (hard/medium/easy), minor difficulty variations between test editions, and the section-adaptive nature of the test. This ensures that a score of 160 always means the same thing, regardless of which test form you took or when you took it.

Analytical Writing: A Different Process

Your essay is scored on a 0–6 scale using a completely different pipeline: a human rater assigns a holistic score (0–6), the e-rater engine independently scores the essay, and if they agree within ~1 point the scores are averaged. If they disagree, a second human rater scores the essay and the two human scores are averaged. Final score rounded to nearest 0.5.

How Is The GRE Structured?

The GRE has 5 sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning (2 sections), and Quantitative Reasoning (2 sections). Total: 1 essay + 54 questions in 1 hour 58 minutes. The current format has been in effect since September 22, 2023.

Adaptive Testing

The GRE uses section-level adaptive testing, where the exam dynamically adjusts difficulty based on your performance in real-time. The first section of each measure (Verbal and Quantitative) is always medium difficulty. Your performance on this first section determines the difficulty of the second section.

Medium Section 2

Key insight: Two test-takers who both get 23/27 correct can receive different scaled scores. The one who aced Section 1 (and therefore received a harder Section 2) will score higher, because the equating process rewards answering harder questions correctly.

Because Section 1 performance determines your Section 2 difficulty (and thus your scoring ceiling), prioritize accuracy on Section 1 questions. Don't rush through them to save time for Section 2. The best preparation is to practice under timed, test-like conditions using the official ETS PowerPrep practice tests.

What Is A Good Score?

Benchmarks based on percentile data. Where you need to land depends on your target programs — the tiers below are a quick reference for how your combined score stacks up nationally.

300
150V + 150Q
Average
A combined score around 300 represents the middle of the pack. Meets minimum requirements for many programs but may not be competitive at selective schools.
310
155V + 155Q
Above Average
A solid score that makes you competitive for most graduate programs. Verbal 155 is the 65th percentile, Quantitative 155 is the 40th percentile.
320
160V + 160Q
Competitive
Competitive for top-50 programs. Verbal 160 is the 84th percentile. Combined with strong research experience and recommendations, this positions applicants favorably.
330+
165V + 165Q
Elite
For admission to top-20 programs, scores of 165+ per section are common among admitted students. A near-perfect score significantly strengthens an application.

Notice the asymmetry: A 155 is the 65th percentile for Verbal but only the 40th for Quantitative. Quant percentiles compress heavily at the top because a high share of test-takers (especially from STEM backgrounds) already score near the ceiling.

Question Types at a Glance

What you'll encounter on test day across the two scored measures.

Verbal Reasoning (27 questions)

Reading Comprehension — passages with multiple-choice, select-all, and select-in-passage questions.
Text Completion — fill 1–3 blanks from answer choices.
Sentence Equivalence — pick 2 of 6 words that create equivalent sentences.

Quantitative Reasoning (27 questions)

Quantitative Comparison — compare Quantity A vs B.
Multiple Choice — single-answer and select-all-that-apply.
Numeric Entry — type in your answer (no choices).
Data Interpretation — sets of questions sharing charts/tables.

Math content covers: arithmetic, algebra (up to a second course), geometry, and data analysis/statistics. No trigonometry, calculus, or proofs. An on-screen calculator is available for all Quantitative questions.

How This Calculator Works

A 4-step scoring pipeline calibrated against 100+ real score reports. The calculator mirrors the logic ETS uses to convert your correct-answer count into a 130–170 scaled score, accounting for the adaptive Section 2 difficulty.

Verbal Thresholds

S1 ≥ 9 → Hard Section 2 (full range to 170)
S1 5–8 → Medium Section 2 (caps ~167)
S1 ≤ 4 → Easy Section 2 (caps ~157)

Quantitative Thresholds

S1 ≥ 8 → Hard Section 2 (full range to 170)
S1 4–7 → Medium Section 2 (caps ~167)
S1 ≤ 3 → Easy Section 2 (caps ~158)
Accuracy: Anchor points validated against documented outcomes including S1=12 + S2=0 → ~153V (hard path), S1=0 + S2=12 → ~147V (easy path), and 15/27 spanning 148–157 across tiers. Model carries a ±2 point margin, consistent with real equating variance across test forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each Verbal and Quantitative section is scored on a scale of 130–170, giving a combined score of 260–340. Analytical Writing is scored 0–6 in 0.5 increments. The raw number of correct answers is converted to a scaled score through an equating process that also accounts for the difficulty of your adaptive Section 2.

No. There is no penalty for wrong answers. A blank answer counts the same as a wrong answer, so you should always guess on questions you cannot solve. Even a random guess on a 5-choice question gives you a 20% chance of a free point.

The GRE adapts at the section level, not the question level. Section 1 of each measure is always medium difficulty, and your performance determines whether Section 2 is easy, medium, or hard. Hitting the hard tier unlocks the full 170 scoring ceiling; the medium and easy tiers cap your ceiling lower.

A combined score of 300 is roughly average. 310 is above average and competitive for most programs. 320 is strong for top-50 programs. 330+ with balanced 165s is typical for top-20 admits. Always check your target programs' admitted-student profiles — field averages vary a lot (Quant is much higher in STEM, Verbal is much higher in humanities).

Verbal and Quant are reported separately and scored on the same 130–170 scale. Programs weight them differently: STEM programs focus heavily on Quant, humanities programs on Verbal, and business programs often look at both plus AW. There is no single "total" score that programs officially rank by — they typically report medians for each section.

One human rater and the ETS e-rater engine each assign a 0–6 holistic score. If they agree within about one point, the scores are averaged. If they disagree, a second human scorer is brought in and the two human scores are averaged. The final AW score is rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Because of equating. ETS adjusts for small difficulty differences between test editions, and the adaptive Section 2 difficulty tier also matters. Two students with identical raw totals can receive different scaled scores: the one whose Section 2 was "hard" (because they aced Section 1) will score higher than the one who was routed to an "easy" Section 2.
