Every PSAT tool in one place. Estimate your Digital PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9 score from raw answers, project your future SAT, and calculate your National Merit Selection Index.
All three PSAT tests convert your raw score — the number of questions you answer correctly, with no penalty for wrong answers — into scaled section scores. Each test uses two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, and each is section-adaptive on the digital format: your performance on the first module decides the difficulty of the second. The scale differs slightly by test, which is why picking the right calculator matters.
| Test | Grade | Section Range | Total Range | National Merit? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSAT 8/9 | 8–9 | 120–720 | 240–1440 | No |
| PSAT 10 | 10 | 160–760 | 320–1520 | No |
| PSAT/NMSQT | 11 | 160–760 | 320–1520 | Yes — qualifying test |
| SAT (for reference) | 11–12 | 200–800 | 400–1600 | No |
Only the junior-year PSAT/NMSQT qualifies for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and it uses a special number called the Selection Index — (2 × Reading and Writing + Math) ÷ 10, ranging from 48 to 228 — rather than your composite score. Reading and Writing is double-weighted, so verbal performance carries the most weight toward qualification. The Commended cutoff is around 207 nationally, and Semifinalist cutoffs run from about 207 to 223 depending on your state. Use the National Merit Selection Index calculator to see where you stand.
Because the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 are built on the same content and scale as the SAT, your PSAT is the best early predictor of your SAT score. As a rule of thumb, students who do not change their preparation score about 80 points higher on the SAT, and those who prepare gain another 100 to 200 points. The PSAT to SAT score converter projects your SAT score and your realistic range after prep.
