ACT Science barely tests outside knowledge — it's really a reasoning test dressed up in graphs and experiments. Questions fall into three passage types, and your score report breaks performance out by each. Practicing across all three, and noticing which one (or the clock) is costing you points, is how you turn a stuck score into a higher scaled one.
Not all practice is equal. Working through passages without reviewing your misses barely moves your score, while a smaller number done deliberately — timed, reviewed, and repeated where you're weak — moves it fast. The five habits below are the ones we see separate students who plateau from students who jump several points, and they've been shown to help learners improve roughly twice as fast:
Take a full-length, timed section before you study anything, and sort your misses by passage type. That single test tells you whether your points are leaking from conflicting-viewpoints passages, from misreading a graph, or simply from running out of time — which is the difference between studying what you need and re-doing what you already handle well.
Once you know your weak spots, drill one passage type at a time. If conflicting viewpoints slows you down, do several in a row until keeping the theories straight feels routine. Master one type, then fold it back into full mixed sections.
Always practice on the clock — about 5 minutes per passage, or roughly 52 seconds per question (60 on the enhanced format). Science isn't hard because the content is advanced; it's hard because it's fast and dense. Learn to go to the figures first and only read the text you actually need.
Reviewing is where the score actually goes up, so budget as much time for it as for the questions. For every miss, go back to the exact graph or line that proves the right answer, and name why the trap looked right — usually it misreads an axis or attributes a claim to the wrong scientist. That habit is what stops the same mistake next time.
Keep a running log of which passage types you miss and how your timed scores trend week to week. Patterns you'd never notice in the moment — “I only miss data questions when I rush the units” — jump out over a few sessions, and watching the number climb keeps you practicing. The biggest 2025 change is to Science: on the enhanced ACT it becomes optional and reported separately, rather than counting toward your core composite. It still uses the same passage types, so what you practice now applies whichever version you take.
