Term / patternMeaning / methodExample
Subject–verb agreementMatch the verb to the grammatical subject, not a nearby word in a describing phrase.“The box of markers is open” uses is because box is singular.
Sentence boundaryA complete independent clause needs an appropriate boundary when joined to another.“The rain stopped; we began the walk” joins two complete clauses with a semicolon.
Pronoun referenceA pronoun must identify the intended antecedent clearly. If Maya gives Noor her notebook, replace her with the owner’s name when ownership is ambiguous.
Modifier placementPlace a describing phrase next to what it describes.“Walking to the gate, Len saw a fox” identifies Len as the walker; “Walking to the gate, a fox was seen” does not.
Transition relationshipChoose a connector for the logical link between ideas. However introduces a contrast; therefore introduces a consequence. Formal tone alone cannot decide between them.
Paragraph relevanceA sentence should help develop the paragraph’s stated purpose. In an explanation of how mulch retains moisture, a sentence about favorite flowers may be an unrelated digression.
No change or no errorRetain correct writing when the task explicitly offers that response; do not invent an error.“Each student has a pass” already agrees. A plural noun elsewhere would not justify replacing has with have.
