TACHS: Ability: figure matrices

Complete a visual relationship across a matrix.

Updated October 3, 2026

A method you can use

  1. Separate attributes before proposing a rule: outline, orientation, position, count and shading. A matrix can change two attributes at once. State a rule that predicts a missing cell and then verify it against every complete row or column where it applies.
  2. Original example: in a three-cell row, an arrow points up, right, then down. A clockwise quarter-turn explains both changes. If a second row begins right, down, then blank, the rule predicts left. Repeating up because it is visually familiar ignores the second row’s starting position.
  3. If the task combines shapes or marks, distinguish an overlay rule from a rule that removes common parts. Count and shading should remain consistent with the proposed operation. Do not accept a rule fitted only to the two cells nearest the blank.
  4. Transfer: rows show filled circle → outline circle → filled circle and filled square → outline square → blank. The final cell should be a filled square if the row rule alternates fill while preserving outline. Check both attributes; a filled triangle satisfies fill but loses the row’s shape. The actual bank supplies original figures and five visual alternatives.
