Necessary conclusion A conclusion must hold in every situation allowed by the premises. All swans here are tagged does not imply all tagged birds are swans. Category boundary Choose the property shared by every member, not a loose association. Triangle, square and pentagon are polygons; circle is not. Counterexample One valid exception defeats a universal claim. The even number 2 disproves “every prime is odd.” Quantifier Distinguish all, some and none. Some buses are electric does not tell us whether most buses are electric. Difference pattern Inspect consecutive differences before guessing a sequence rule. 4, 7, 12, 19 has differences 3, 5, 7; a consistent continuation is 28.
