What GRE Reading Comprehension tests
Roughly half of GRE Verbal is Reading Comprehension. Passages run from a single dense paragraph to several paragraphs, drawn from the sciences, humanities, and social sciences. You don’t need prior knowledge — every answer is supported by the text. Common question types include:
- Main idea & primary purpose — the point of the whole passage.
- Inference — what the passage supports without stating outright.
- Function — why the author included a particular sentence or detail.
- Select-one-or-more — pick every correct statement (no partial credit).

Strategy: map the passage, don’t memorize it
Strong readers don’t try to absorb every detail — they build a quick mental map: what’s the main claim, how is each paragraph functioning, and where does the author’s opinion show? With that map, detail questions become a fast lookup instead of a re-read.
Study tip: after each paragraph, pause and ask “what did that add, and how does the author feel about it?” One line of structure beats re-reading the whole passage for every question.
