You might have heard the term 'SAT word' or 'SAT vocabulary', but what does it actually mean?
Typically, an SAT word is a word that is considered somewhat obscure and difficult to understand the meaning of. These words are not used everyday and are typically rarely seen outside of higher-education acadamia.
The difficulty of SAT vocabulary lies exactly in the fact that these words are rarely used. Because so few people know and use these words, the likelyhood of a high-school student already knowing them is very low.
Vocabulary skills are tested on many question types on the Reading and Writing section of the exam. It is most directly tested through Word in Context questions, which assess understanding and application of vocabulary used in various situations, but many passage-based reading questions also require a solid understanding of difficult words.
Transitions questions also test specific transition words and phrases, but don't worry as there are usually no more than 40 of these.
A strong vocabulary helps you comprehend and analyze passages more efficiently. This is important because each Reading and Writing module only allows 32 minutes to solve 27 problems, which is not a lot of time considering many of these problems involve reading 80-100 word passages.
It also enhances your ability to understand nuances and subtleties in provided texts, which helps eliminate choices and increase your odds of answering questions correctly.
While there is no specific number, having a robust vocabulary of around 500 high-frequency SAT words can significantly boost your performance. Regular practice with these words can make a substantial difference.
